Camp Fires Only


Residential Burning of Yard and Garden Waste is banned from June 16 to September 30; camp fires only. (inclusive, unless restricted by the Ministry of Forests & Range and the Ministry of Environment). When permitted by the Coastal Fire Center, CAMPFIRES CAN BE NO LARGER THAN 0.5 OF A METER TALL AND 0.5 OF A METER IN DIAMETER(1 foot 6 inches tall x 1 foot 6 inches across) AND THERE MUST BE A FIRE GUARD AROUND THE FIRE AS WELL AS A SHOVEL OR 8 LITERS OF WATER NEARBY TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. Residential Burning of Yard and Garden Waste


October 1 to June 15 (inclusive, unless restricted by the Ministry of Forests & Range and the Ministry of Environment) Open air burning of refuse is permitted only during the above dates. The size of the pile allowed is up to 1 meter (3 feet) in diameter, or in a domestic incinerator fitted with a metal screen having 12.5mm (1/2 inch) or smaller mesh. NO PERMIT REQUIRED

The material burned is to be clean and dry, and in a condition that provides for safe and proper combustion.

BURNING OF CONSTRUCTION WASTE, DEMOLITION MATERIAL, RUBBER, PLASTIC, TAR AND ASPHALT ROOFING IS NOT PERMITTED.

Land Clearing Debris


Effective immediately, pile-burning of all MACHINE-STACKED or CATEGORY 3 QUANTITIES* of LANDCLEARING DEBRIS is BANNED in all CVRD Electoral Areas (except Thetis Island). Land clearing debris must be chipped, ground or reused on site. If no suitable alternatives are available, land clearing debris may be burned ONLY with the use of an air curtain or trench burner.

Clearance Requirements


Location of Open Air Burn Pile:
3 meters (10 feet) from any combustible material and 6 meters (20 feet) from any building.

Location of Domestic incinerators:
2 meters (6 feet) from any combustibles and 7.5 meters (25 feet) from any building.
